Being involved in SEO in many ways over the years I have been asked what’s SEO? way too many times to count. I’ve even been asked this at SEO conferences. But certainly, each time I’m at some non-work related social function and someone asks me what I really do for a full time income and I say "I do SEO for companies and their websites", what is SEO? more often than not follows. Sometimes in an effort to avoid this question, easily simply say I do Internet Marketing, people just about assume what that is.

I want to tell people what SEO is, because the more people that know very well what SEO is the more folks will understand the procedure and the more respect the will get.

Search Engine Optimization, at the very least the way I would put it, is the procedure for increasing a website’s presence to the very best of search engines when it is of a particular keyword phase.

I had to include that last part in because if I see a course website at the top of a results page when I enter "cheap womans purses" I wouldn’t say that the course website is exactly optimized, despite the fact that its at the top of the search engine.

SEO always starts and ends with the website, but more particularly it concerns the content on the website. To get a better understanding of what SEO is, you need to first get an understand of how you want your website to act. A lot of people want their website to give them an online presence and add to their overall marketing goals. Basically, most business owners would love if their website earned good solid leads or purchases.

It’s better to have a more impressive website with another page for products or services, than to just have one service page listing all the services provided. So if you are in the "cheap womans purses" business and you also sell over forty different varieties of purses, it’s necessary to develop a page for every purse and write original content on each page.

The reason is, well for just one, Internet users don’t possess much patience, so if someone is searching for a specific purse or any other product it’s important to have that page indexed in to the search engine results pages (SERPs) rather than the homepage. Because if your homepage is what you’re optimizing, then you’re hoping that the individual searching for your product has patience to dig through your website to find the particular product they want. Truth is you have to grab a person’s interest in 7 seconds or less, or there likely to bounce.

There is such a thing called duplicate content and if your coping and pasting product information from another site, the Google bots will realize that, and that will work against you in your SEO goals.

So, if your planning on doing SEO on your own, for your own website, prepare yourself to do a lot of writing, but this will not be too big of an issue, since your writing about services and products your probably talk about on a regular basis, right?

Any white SEO company will tell you that your webpages need good quality and relevant inbound links to provide your webpages authority. That is a very time-consuming and painstaking process that involves a lot of effort, some creativity and a lot of writing as well.

There are plenty of methods to find quality inbound links for the site, through the use of content, forums, press releases, social bookmarking, etc. But the most important thing to remember is to make certain that your links are coming from a relevant source.

The confusing part, when I explain this process is when I begin to talk about PR Juice, or clout. This is once you create an inbound link from the website that has a PR of 4 and its own linking to your site, that includes a PR of 2. Some of the PR from that site will enter your site giving it authority.

I.E. Should you have 100 articles about baking cookies with links pointing to your online cookie store, then those links will add clout to your site and it will then get a high PR or Page Rank, and the high a webpage’s Page Rank the more likely it’ll be near the top of search engines.

The main points of this article is to point out what SEO is and how to understand it. Both main the different parts of Google’s algorithm is relevancy, and that is what I was talking about, when I was discussing original content and giving each product or services a particular webpage. The other part is authority and that concerns the hyperlink building from quality and relevant sites.
